A Mother, Her Autistic Son… and the Creature in the Trees

It's from a mother and the autistic son who asked her to follow him into the woods. She said yes. What started as a bonding trip turned into something much more. Whoops in the distance, pine cone's thrown from nowhere, footprints, eyeshine, and the feeling that they were never really alone. From the forest of Pike's Peak, Colorado to the quiet ridges of Rampart Range. This is the story of a family changed by Bigfoot. It's real, it's raw, and it's not what you expect. This is a story of Dana Beasley, the woman they call Sasquatch Mom. Stay with us, all right, Bigfoot Society. We got the privilege of talking to Dana Beasley today. Dana is a Bigfoot researcher from the Pike's Peak region of Colorado, and she and her autistic son go out in that area and have really experienced some interesting things. She'll be sharing about that today. So welcome to the show. Dana. How's it going.

1:01 Oh, it's going great. Thanks for having me on. Jeremiah. Absolutely before we get started. Is there anything else context wise the listeners would need to know about you guys before we get gone. Well, I am a child of the seventies, so I have always been fascinated by this subject. And one night, when my son was a teenager he's twenty four now, he asked me. He said, Mom, I want you to go bigfooting with me. And I thought to myself, Yeah, sounds intriguing, but too scary, not interested. And I changed my mind because I realized that reaching my son meant going after what he was interested in, and I was intrigued with it anyway. So that's kind of how I dived into it, from being a child of the seventies, with my son encouraging me that that.

2:01 Is fantastic and that and how good, How that's amazing. You know. That's what being a good parent is is like realizing what your kid is into and like, I'm going to use that to connect with them, no matter what, no matter exactly how you know out there it is and good Anya for that. But you know, Dana, I'm going to make sure. I want to make sure that you have the time to share what you guys have experienced. So I'm going to go ahead and hand things over to you. Feel free to take us back to you know, when you first started experiencing some things out there. Sure, so, as I said, my son challenged me to go and search for Bigfoot. And the first time we did that was in twenty nineteen, and I had contacted Jim Myers. I'd heard about him, I'd heard about Sasquatch Outpost, and so we camped near there at Meridian and that was when I first had a quote unquote big fitting experience.

3:07 I can't say that anything extraordinary happened, but it was a learning experience and I just fell in love with it. We went to the Sasquatch Outpost. We loved that. It was so fascinating, and so that was kind of how we launched our time. And we've done fascinating things like go to Lost Creek Colderness. I've seen things that I can't explain, like a huge double X in the forest down there at Lost Creek Wilderness. I just can't comprehend how this double X got there. And then, like I said, we do research mostly in pipes Peak region along raandpart Range Road, and I'll never forget the first time we went to a spot there that we actually called the spot where it was Halloween night and we went we got to this bridge and we were overlooking some valleys and some more ridges. That area is kind of like different fingers of hallers and ridges. And we heard a howl and Sam, that's my son's name, he got so excited and he starts mimicking Matt Moneymaker. I do believe there's a squatch in these woods or something. And it was just to see that join in his face when he heard that, and the thrill of it was so tremendously exciting. And so we had that experience, and then

4:42 then we had an amazing experience at the ridge. The next ridge over. We went all the way down to the end of this hiking trail and it was there was a big hill overlooking a valley of deep deep woods, and we heard whoops and we heard some really interesting things. And then on our way back we rested. We were resting on some stumps and I was wearing some amplification headphones, and all of a sudden I heard this well and it sounded like it was right next to me because I was wearing the headphones. And my first thoughts thought was that's a bigfoot. And my second thought was, we've got to get out of here. And Sam, of course he heard it too, but he heard it where it actually was. He said it was just down the valley, just down from the ridge where we were at. So we started making our way back. But Sam was fascinating and he kept fascinated, and he kept looking and searching and calling, and then I made a call and we heard one back, and that was just such an interesting experience.

5:54 And then we went back home and we lickd up the Sierra Sounds and we found a spot where it sounded exactly like Sierra Sounds, so we're pretty sure that we heard a big foot. That was a tremendous, tremendous experience. And then he started to go more north on Rampart Range Road, almost towards Douglas County, and we would camp over there. And one time we were camping late September and Sam and I were sitting by the fire. My husband was already in bed in the camper, and it was about eleven o'clock at night, it was cold, full moon just came out, and we all of a sudden heard like a bark behind us, a real sharp one, and then we heard this holler that was down the hill from us, and it moved across the valley. And at that time Sam was wearing the amplification headphones and he heard children laughing and giggling. And this again, this was eleven o'clock at night, and this wasn't near any of the dispersed campgrounds that we could tell, and it was eleven o'clock at night and it was cold, so it was so fascinating and I wasn't scared or anything.

7:19 I just felt the sense of peace, like, wow, this is just surreal. But Sam heard all of that, and then the next day we went down to that valley where we thought that the sound originated from, and we found a bunch of boat trees, and then Sam went on this hill and he found some small footprints. So that was one of my most favorite times we've heard. We've been to that area several times. We've heard lots of howls there. In fact, one time Sam thought that he heard something in a gully at night. He described it as maybe as what he called a sentence that was guarding the rest of the family. That was his supposition.

8:05 And then last fall we were at that same place and we were out there at night and he heard he saw some eyeshine and he saw a dark figure and it kind of turned around. Now we look back through my video because all this time, most of the time, I've been recording this in video, and I created my own YouTube channel called sasquash Mom, just mainly the document in our experiences. And there was a deer that went by, but Sam doesn't think it was the deer, so that was a real puzzler for us. So we've just it's just been an amazing journey of hearing mainly vocalizations, seeing some interesting structures and wondering where they come from and how they got there. Who did that? Was it man made?

8:58 Was it Sasquash made. One time we were camping near Turner Gold Show for by terry All Reservoir, and we were just sitting around the fire and all of a sudden, some pine cones started to be thrown at us. And we lived up in the trees and there weren't any pine cones right where we were, so that was very odd and mysterious to us. So we haven't had any sightings, you know, class A sidings. Sam may have seen something but he's not sure. It's nothing nothing for sure, but just the adventure and the mystery just keeps us going out there, and mainly just we're able to spend time with each other. That's the main, really important thing that we get to do.

9:50 I agree. I you know, I've taken Ey as well have a child and I've taken him out in the woods to do kind of like bigfoot camp out father something, and it is a really it's a really special time. I'd recommend, you know, parents, if you can take your kids camping, it is a great way to bond for sure. You know, you mentioned that you have the Sasquatch Mom YouTube channel. Have you ever seen anything upon second review of the footage that you're putting up there, or have people pointed out anything? After seeing people.

10:35 Have pointed out things. Now I don't know that I can I see them myself, but definitely people have pointed out things. Are like there was this one time the same area in the northern part of Rampart Range where we go to that we hurt some yips and some strange howls and I happen to catch that on video and I played it and people were like, oh, that it's a bigfoot. And then I then last summer we went to the Bigfoot Conference hosted by Sasquatch Outposts and Sasquatch Clothing Company, and I there's a gentleman named Jason Frank who wrote a book and he is a well known research in this region, and he listened to it and he said it was a bigfoot. So I don't know, but but yes, but I have had people say in my videos, oh, yes, there's something there at three thirty eight, you know whatever.

11:30 So yes, that's awesome. I love when the community starts to come together and you get people throwing stuff into your your comments and like, hey, look at that, and it's always a good time. I'll yeah, yeah, yeah, I'll be putting out of vlogs kind of like that starting in a few months, and it'll be fun to see if that that stuff kind of gets picked up people start and. Stuff from there. But what I love is that there kids that watch it too, and particularly a brother's named Jacob and Noah, and they just love to watch my show. So that's pretty helpling that. I just love that there are kids watching it and liking it.

12:15 No, absolutely, I mean, you never know who's watching your content, and you know, I'll be at conferences and I'll have families come up and like really little kids saying how we love listening to your show, and I'm like, well, that's why I edit up to swears now, because you never know right when the little kids are listening. I know, my most popular video has a swear word in it because we were coming down a trail. We were hearing all these whoops all around, and then all of a sudden we hear gunshots and some idiots were shooting off guns off of the road very very short distance from the road, and it was illegal to shoot there, and I let off that'd swear word, and ardly I ever swear. So, yeah, that is there.

13:06 That's funny. You got your PG thirteen for that one, probably, yeah, right right right. You mentioned that Sam found some some uh some smaller footprints the one time. Do you have any estimate of how of their their length at all? Or were you able to measure them? You know, I think sometimes we get so excited that we forget about things like that. Yep, I don't have that, but I do have that on video. Okay, gotcha, there you go. Well, we'll have the link to that definitely in the description show notes. So people can check that out then come back here and you can they can be like it was. It was this big.

13:50 Have you guys ever experienced any weird physical effects when you've been out in the field looking for things? Sam? Yeah, Sam has. Before I even got involved in this, we had visited my brother in New Mexico in the Manzano Mountains and we had taken our camper there and Sam was going around tree knocking and all of a sudden, he felt like he had this headache and he was tired, and he had to go inside the camper and rest. Then he told me at the time, he said, I've been zapped. And I didn't really know what that meant because I hadn't gotten into it at the time, But yeah, that was definitely one time. And then another time we were out hiking in one of our favorite places and it happened to him again. He just got a really bad headache and very tired, and so we went back into the cars. Soon as we got into the car, he was fine. We started driving around Rampar range and he was perfectly fine. So those were definitely two times I noticed that he may have been what they call that.

15:08 That's really interesting. It is also interesting how it affects different people in different ways, and especially when you take the individual out of the environment. It usually it's like, all right, we're good. Yeah, yeah, very very. He was perfectly fine. So I think there's something too infra sound. It's definitely a very interesting thing. Have you started to get to the point where people around your area are starting to become aware, Hey, this person is into bigfoot? You know, I'm going to share my account with these individuals. Has anything like that ever started to happen to you guys.

15:56 No, unfortunately not. Most of our connection since have been through Jim Myers and more up in that area, so I haven't met too many people around Colorado Springs. I would love to. I'd actually like to start an organization mainly so that some other, maybe younger people can be with Sam going out into the mountains and he could do a little more radical things without his mother tagging along, who isn't in you know, the best of shape, and is a slight bit bit older than him, so you know, that would be so great. And also I'd love to camp out in the Rampire range. You know, you always hear the stories are of you're in a tent and Jim Myers tell stories like that he's in a tent and he sees his hand print on and but maybe there'd be more safety in numbers. I'm a little bit uh scared of that. I've come a long ways because when I first started, I would get so scared. It was a lot. I was be scared to go out at night, and now I love it. I love going out on night ikes and I love camping in wilderness areas in my safe camper. But yeah, I'm trying to get myself to go actual tent camping in a total where there's no campgrounds whatsoever. In these dispersed hiking places.

17:26 I can tell you, but it's pretty wild. Yeah. Yeah, so that would be where safety and numbers would be nice. Besides just my son and I or my son husband and I. Yeah, that would be nice. So we'll see. But yeah, I would love to know more people around this region that actually do that, because I don't know of anybody. Well, well, hopefully through this people from that region can check out your channel, maybe start a few conversations on the U in your comments, all that good stuff that can lead to some fun, fun things. But yes, that'd be great.

18:07 Are you okay if we discuss autism and bigfoot for a few minutes? Oh? Absolutely, okay one of my favorite. Yeah. Absolutely. Do you think that, I mean, this is going right into it, but do you think there could potentially be any connection between autism and bigfoot? That is something that's being thrown around the community in the last few years. Interesting in the sense of someone likes Sam having a special ability to sense things. I would definitely agree with that.

18:51 If that, I'm not even exactly sure what you mean because that hasn't reached my ears, but I definitely see in him a ability to like First of all, he can focus on this subject. He focused so much on it that we were homeschooling when this all started. I turned this into a homeschooling science class cryptozoology and gave him a full credit for it. Because when he dives into something, he dives into it, and he did it full force and with he has a lot of knowledge about it. So I definitely think that there is some kind of connection with being able to have that kind of different sense, if you know what I mean.

19:42 Now, I definitely get it. I've even been involved with certain groups where there has been an autistic child present, and sometimes there's more interactions which you know, and then and then you're maybe you're thinking, is it because that individual is here. I don't know if there's a way to prove that, but there's some people, especially if you know there's an individual his name is Chris Noel, and he even has a a book about the potential connections between Sasquatch and autism, and you know, it's just I think it's also maybe a thing on the mind of the community. I don't know if you've you've listened to the Telepathy Tapes podcast that has been it's very very interesting.

20:42 It's it's I can tell you that this has helped my son so much because before we started this and some other things that I'm doing here locally, he was stuck in front of his computer. He already talked to anybody. And then we got involved in bigfooting. We went to like one time we went to a town hall that was hosted by Sasquad out posts up in Bailey or near Bailey, and there's like what thirty or forty people in the room and all talking about their experiences and all of a sudden, Sam had to talk about something he knew about, which was the Saint Louis vocalizations, and nobody knew what he was talking about. They were all very fascinated, and then they came up and asked him about it afterwards. This is my son who is extremely shy, and like I said, he will He at that point would hardly talk to anyone except for me. He had to speak up in front of a group. I was floored.

21:43 And so he's just progressively gotten able to talk to more people. And now like last summer, as I said, we went to the expedition, the Bigfoot Expedition, and we were driving out to one of the sites on a night hike, and he and this older gentleman were in the back of a pickup truck and he talked to this guy Bill all the way there, all the way back, he talked to anybody. And I told the one of the directors of the weekend, I told him about Sam and what this had done for him, and I think maybe I was you know, I think that touched him deeply. So there is definitely something really healing about being out there in the woods and being out there with his community.

22:30 It has helped Sam so much. That's great to hear that. It is so empowering for him. And it's such an interesting community because you get these events that happened and they are not they're not written about anywhere, and they're usually not in videos. So then it becomes a passing down of oral tradition in a way where you have one individual that really knows all this stuff about one certain location, and like the Sasquatch activity there, we're like the Saint Louis vocalizations, which I'm not really even familiar with myself. Now I'm super curious about, like, wow, is this in Colorado? Yes, Missouri? I don't know.

23:16 I think it's Missouri. It's really interesting. Yeah, you have to go check that out. So it is a very cool thing and also empowering. How cool is it that you know, now he's just he's getting out there, he's talking to people and really making him, you know, come out of his shell. I guess in a way. Yes, yes, exactly, it's exactly what it's done. And now it's interesting. My husband, he's also autistic. He's not been officially diagnosed, but you know, we think it's hereditary and he has different manifestations of it, different kind of behaviors, and my husband is a bit oblivious. We have to constantly tell him, don't get too far from you know, because safety is so important. You don't want anyone to be separated and not see each other in the woods.

24:06 So yeah, he's And then our joke is when he sneezes, he sneezes so loud that he scares all the squatches away. Yep, so he's there a foolproof safety. All he has to do is sneeze and we're fine. That's true. Yeah, stuff gets too crazy and bring out Dad and he. Can Yeah, well can do that on demand. That's funny. Oh man, has there been ever a time when you guys have been out there and things got a little bit too intense for you guys?

24:47 Well, I may have thought so, but I was a chicken, you know, like hearing some thing russell or at night or whatever I was. And this is the other thing. It has changed me so much because I used to be so afraid of everything, and it has made me realize that there are worse things to face than the monster you think that is lurking in the woods. It's even it's so much harder to face the monster that's inside of you that tells you, you know, I'm talking about me. It tells me that I'm not good enough or anever amount to anything or all that. The more I face my fears out there in the woods, the more I am able to face my own internal and external fears, and the boulder I get and the more progress I make. So to me, it's just it's saved my life. My son saved my life in that way. Especially, I'm just being physical because because before this I was not exercising. I didn't I was losing mobility. And then we got into this and we had this idea. In fact, our one of our goals is to hike the road a trail for thirty miles. Oh, you got to get in shape. And now I have a reason to get in shape. And so I've changed in that way too, And I can thank my son for practically, well literally saving my life.

26:15 Wow, what a journey for both of you. That is That is fantastic. Have you so it sounds like you're over over the time. You know, you went from being fearful to not as as much. Did you find that that affected the interactions at all? Well, I can. Unfortunately, I can't say that I've had any particular interactions. I've heard. I've heard some vocalizations. You probably have heard some responses, but so far it hasn't been that close. But it would be interesting to see what happens when it is it is closer. I have had, like I don't know if this means anything, but I've had some interesting dreams of dreamt about bigfoots. I even had a when we were out in Lost Creek. I heard and I don't know if what was my sleep in my sleep or if I really heard I heard a big foot howl. And then I was in this paralysis like where you didn't know if you're asleep or not.

27:24 And then I did fall asleep for sure, And I had a dream about a yetti. But I told Daphney Meyers about that not long after, because I think we went back to Bailey and talked to her and she said, yeah, that campground there were some vocalizations like a year ago, and people were so scared they got out of there. So maybe I really heard a bigfoot vocalization. I don't know, but you know too. I think somehow it's interesting that I've had all these dreams about them, So I don't know what it means, but it's interest to me. Yeah, yeah, I agree with you. You know, when I came back from being out in Oregon had some of the most vivid, intense streams I've ever heard in my life, and it was a little I'm not really sure what to make of it. Still, it was almost like you were really in the dream. It's very weird, very weird stuff.

28:26 Yes, yes, and these big foot well, they were both females that tutoring they had, and they weren't scary. They just had this huge sense of peace about it. I don't see them as scary monsters, although you know, they can be, and some can be more aggressive than others, especially if they're guarding their territory or their families. But I don't look at them as horrible, horrendous monsters that go around killing people of purpose. I think they're all there's different kinds, but you know, around here, I see them as peaceful beings. Not that you know, I'm going to be foolish about it, but but that's how I see them. I have a lot of respect for what people call the forest people or sabe or you know whatever, you want to.

29:14 Call them, you know. Besides, you know we did talk about you have your YouTube channel, but you've also are an author of fiction as well. Would you be able to share a little bit about or about your Bigfoot theme fiction as well? Yeah, yeah, of course. So so that first day that we the first time that we camped over Meridian Campground, I had an idea to write a novel about a teenager who is who has Asperger's or autism that meets a junior Sasquatch. And so I've been writing that novel since twenty nineteen, like just in bits and pieces. I'm probably halfway through the rev draft, and that has been so much fun, and I've used a lot of my experiences and also just I've since then, I've listened to a lot of podcasts with people's experiences and kind of weaved all these kinds of things together. So I don't know if I'm going to get it done this summer, but hopefully by next summer. And then and then a couple of halloweens ago, I got an idea to write a short story, and it's about a prank that these this brother pulls on his brother, and that comes from when I lived in Albuquerque when I was a child.

30:43 My two brothers came home one day scared and white as a ghost because they said they saw a bigfoot and climbed down this rock and take this girl and take it away. And this was the the question that I had growing up. Was this real? Did they really see it? One of my brothers says, Oh, it was probably somebody pranking us. And so it gave me an idea to write a story about these two competitive brothers and their little sister and how they encounter a bigfoot in Washington State because I also used to live there.

31:24 I was at Military brad so I've moved around a lot. So yeah, So I wrote this story all about this family and they're encounter with bigfoot on Halloween. And then I decided to expand it and write these short stories that kind of go along for every month, like one we'll be Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc. And they'll move around. They'll be in Washington State, then New Mexico, Wyoming, Colorado, And I'm gonna put some of those different, like I'll take take some of those stories because it's is set in the seventies and so is my novel. And I'm going to take those old stories and kind of talk about them and you know, bring them out that way. So it's it's really fun. And then and then I'm also taking all of my videos one by one. I'm taking the transcript of it and turning it into a story and then explaining it more in print of what happened.

32:23 And all of these will be an or are in my sub stack account. I have a substack account, and that's where I'm publishing them right now. That's awesome, And how wild is it that this subject has kind of been following you through your life? You have that history from the earlier that interesting. Yes. Yes, In fact, when I was fourteen and I lived in Littleton, Colorado, I thought the Bigfoot was going to come over the hill, come up my room and take me away. And I was so frightened. But I was for this is so funny. That's how scared I was a Bigfoot. But yet there was this huge fascination.

33:07 My brother David and I used to we used to go around in the Heymess Mountains looking for Bigfoot. Of course we didn't know what we were doing, but you know, so I had memories of actually doing that, not that it was, you know, on any grand scale, but that actually was a part of my childhood and Sam just touched this part of me, this nostalogia part of me. So it was really neat. That is is very cool. You know, you focus on the Pike's Peak area. Do you have any advice for people that might want to check out that area? You know, focused on bigfoot activity and different places.

33:52 Well, there was actually a lot of sightings in the Pike's Peak area, and a lot of them are in Taylor, you know, obviously Tayler County, but a long rampart range road the backside of Pike's Peak. I had a friend who saw a bigfoot come through Bar Camp Bark Bark Trail camp or bar Camp Trail or something. This is a campground that is on the trail that goes up to Pike's Peak on the east side, and she saw a bigfoot. So there's Skagway Reservoir, There's been sidings there, It's just all over. My best piece of advice is to go look at either BFRO or the Bigfoot Mapping Project and that will tell you where those sidings are.

34:42 And what we try to do is we try to look for those sidings and go to that site and talk about it from the original siding. So we do some of that in our research. But yeah, go to BFRO or the Bigfoot Mapping Project and there's so many sidings around here. Is it one of those regions where you really have to do your homework before just launching into an area or is it pretty easy access to get to these places? That depends. Some of them, you know, you need a four wheel drive. I would some of them are pretty rough roads. Now, we haven't ventured into too many wilderness areas here. The wilderness areas are more like up North and Lost Creek and stuff like that. But I would say when you're going into the woods, always be prepared, just like boy scouts, right, So you want to you want to be able to especially defend yourself against bears or cougars. Those are probably more of a danger than anything, although we've never had any problems with that. But you want to be prepared if you're going to go into the woods. I'd say that's the number one thing. So you haven't a wotter, and you have some kind of protection like maybe it's bear spray, and you have whatever it is that you need. To be in the woods.

36:12 You have a good map, so those kinds of things. That's that's pretty solid advice. Yeah, yeah, I'm here lock. What happened to the people in Washington State. It went out but in December and they died. That you just have to be smart about it and be prepared. That is definitely an understatement. You know, the elements can change on you, and especially right that area. Is Oh that area, it could snow in July, you don't know. Yeah, do you guys ever talk about you know, man, if we could go to this place in the US too to look for Bigfoot, that would be really cool.

36:55 Do you guys have like a bucket list of places to go to or just kind of focus on Colorado? Well, I'll tell you I have a nephew who lives in the Olympia. I'd love to go there. Oh my gosh. I also have a niece who lives his sister lives in Reno near lay Tahoe. That would be amazing. So yeah, definitely those two places. Also, my parents are both from Wyoming, and my mother lived in Sheridan, Wyoming when she grew up, and so I know that there's a lot of sidings there. We would just love to go to the Big Horns and to the wind River Reservation area. There's a lot of sidings there and in Riverton where my dad grew up, so I think that would be awesome. So definitely we would love to now like in twenty twenty where we went to South Dakota into the hill country and we did do a little bit of big footing, but I don't remember anything too significant happening. It was fun, but but definitely yeah, and then then our ultimate goal and not that we would find any big fit over here over there, but we'd love to go to Scotland and then like a totally different subject and see lock Ness.

38:13 That would be really fun too, So I. Mean that that would be phenomena. But yeah, Scotland, I mean there are some of the Highland areas and you've got, yeah, you know your wild man stories and. You exactly right right, you never know, I think it would be well, it would just be fascinated. For one thing, I'm I'm a Scottish Scottish ance history so I just love to go there again. But yeah, that would be fascinating. That would be our ultimate ultimate dream there. Do you this is kind of putting you on the spot. But do you have any advice to Let's say, if there's parents that are listening where they have, you know, autistic where they are super into bigfoot. Have there been any lessons that you've learned over the years as you started to get into this subject with your son, Well, I.

39:15 Would say give them time and space. I mean, my son struggles with energy, so he's not always able to go when I think I want to, so I have to be patients. And then sleep is a huge factor. So if you're going out camping, making sure that they get outequate sleep. I know it's difficult when you're out they're camping, especially if you're in a tent, but that has been something that has thrown us off. If Sam doesn't get to sleep that he needs, then he just doesn't have the energy to go out in the mountains.

39:57 So definitely king about how the kids can get sleep is important. And also you want to make sure that you're in sight of each other at all times. Having walkie talkies would be really good. That's what we have, so but yeah, definitely my number one thing would be don't let them out of your sight. Train them never to get out of side because it could take a second and they're gone. I don't mean to scare anybody, but it's just the facts. So you want to make sure that they're always in your site and they know to be in your site. No, I think that that is great advice as well.

40:40 I mean it's yeah, it's definitely not to scare anything anyone, but it is it is a conversation that needs to be said.
