Baby Cries in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan

Aaron's from a southwest part of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and she's a listener that reached out to me through email about some interesting things that happened around her area that she realized this nificance of after she heard it mentioned in a episode of the podcast.

Absolutely and likewise, and you know what, Erin, I'm going to go ahead and have you take the mic and share what's been happening around your house in the last few years. Problem. I have lived in Upper Peninsula a couple of years now. My husband, he grew up here. It's a pretty quiet area, a little small little town. Not much action, thankfully. Fortunately, don't really have too much experience in the Upper pronunce besides just living here recently, besides visiting about a decade or so on and off. But it's just me and my husband and we like to try to catch the Northern mics when they're available. Obviously it's a hit and this kind of thing. We try to get out there at night whenever you think it's going to happen. With space weather forecasts, you you usually don't get no more than about seventy two hours notice. Unfortunately, when it happens, and beginning of August, I think it was like the evening of the eleventh, early morning of the twelfth. We had known that there was going to be a spike in our activity. We went outside to go look and

2:35 take pictures as we usually do, and it was about two am or so, maybe a little later, and it was the calm night with August and lights were put on a pretty good shows, so we were staying out a little longer, and everything was pretty quiet, as it is around here. You might hear some logging trucks at night, maybe a cop car, but there's not much traffic or anything. It's such a small town. And we just were doing our thing, and we use a long exposure and you take pictures of the northern lights, so you stand around waiting for the exposure to take and we just started to hear this baby crying and it sounded really upset Jeremiah, like it like it needed help, and it was really just concerning the first here. And I looked at my husband and he said, oh, that's just a baby, and I was like, a baby two two thirty in the morning, and they would a baby be doing outside And he didn't really say anything afterwards. So I just stood there and I'm listening to it, and in my head I'm like, oh, maybe it's somebody knew to moved to the area, they

4:07 knew the Northern lights were going to be out. Maybe they didn't really leave their child inside, so they brought it outside, but it just didn't make any sense because this. Baby just kept crying and crying. And I used Google Maps and in two directions, the woods are about fifteen hundred feet from our house. Like our town blocks are pretty small. So I'm listening to this baby crying, and I'm starting to get a little concerned because with a baby, what's going on here?

4:49 And something in my head just kept telling me there's no way somebody has their baby outside. Unfortunately, I was a little too scared. I'm going to walk down the road to go try to find this said baby, because if it's a picture black out, there's not really there's no street lights or nothing like that. It's just whatever light submitted from people's houses. It is pretty much always ten minutes of this baby crying noise. My husband and his city was getting cold and wanted to go outside, and I was like, okay, try to take a few more pictures and I'll follow you in. So he goes in the house and I'm just kind of still listening to this baby crying, and after about three and four minutes, after one inside, it just stopped. Like it wasn't like somebody who has calmed the baby down or anything. It's just the baby is cut out. And I was like, that's really weird. So then now everything's just quiet, and I'm still staying there and I just listening. I didn't really hear much else. And I had been listening to your podcast usually at night when before I go to bed, and I find your voice soothing, so that seems to work for me, and I just it just popped in my head an episode where somebody had been mentioning baby cryingly,

6:24 and I was at first, I was like, well, that sounds a little crazy, but we'll see what happens. I was standing next to my porch and I just bowed up my fist and I wrapped on it two times. Over to the southeast. I hear two knocks back, just almost immediately, and I was like, that's interesting. And I'm very scientifically minded. I like like averages, so I like to do things and it'll be three. So I paused a moment, and then I knocked again, but instead of two times, I knocked three times, and again I heard a response, only instead of being from the southeast, it was more of the direct south region. At first, I thought I was like, maybe somebody's messing with me. And then I was trying to calculate the distance from the first sound of the second town, and I'm like, there's no way somebody could have ran that fast, because one it's going uphill. And so I'm like, Okay, two different knocks, two different directions, I'll go ahead and do it a third time. So I knocked a third time, and I did four knocks that time, and I got a third response back four knocks, just just as I had done

7:56 in the same manner, only now it was the southwest. They had this baby crying and it stopped very abruptly, and then for whatever reason, I just decided to do the knox and then I got the responses, and I felt pretty dumbfounded because I was like, man, none of this is making any sense. I don't know what's going on here. And the more I thought about it, the more I was like, this is not like my neighbor's messing with me or anything. There's no way. And once I had realized that each response was a different direction and correspondence, that I was semicircles surrounded even though I'm in the middle of town. So I felt kind of scared, and meanwhile I still had con firm for this baby that I was had of heard. I just I don't know what it was. I can't, I can never I will never be able to tell you that I know what any of it was. But that's pretty much what happened. And in our area, Like I said, it's a very small town, but a couple of thousand people, and once you start to leave the town, you run

9:28 into State Forest, National Park, et cetera. I had went inside afterwards because I got scared, and I was like, okay, I've had them, and I went I talked to my husband and I'm like, that was really weird. And he's not the first time I've heard that. I was like, what are you talking about? When he's all I grew up here, Like, oh, yeah, he had said that when he was a young man dealing house with some friends and he had heard the baby crying before, and then some other things had happened to him that night. And I'll go ahead and let him explain that in just a moment. Do you have any questions over Yeah.

10:19 So that's extremely interesting because you have to remember all that happens at two am in the morning, right. Yeah, Like it's late at night, it's there's no wind, it's dead calm. You couldn't hear. There was no other people outside. It was just stuff outside. Yeah, the chances of your neighbor messing with you at two am knocking back on something. It sounds like the knocks were like immediately returning back to you pretty much, right, Yeah. It was. It was pretty immediate. And then I used Google Google Maps to help me know how far it was to the first woodline, and it's about fifteen hundred feet, so it's not that far. It didn't seem like they were knocked some miles off. It seemed, I don't know, maybe three quarters.

11:10 Of a mile. How would you describe the intensity, or let's say, if someone was actually hitting the side of a tree with a stick, how hard did it sound. It sounded hard. It sounded harder than me knocking on my porch, and the reverberation seemed a lot stronger than my hand knocking. It was like a piece of wood hitting another piece of wood. Okay, it wasn't like my hand hitting the wood. It was a different sound, louder, and they seemed to come I don't know, maybe within three seconds of my knocks every single time.

12:00 Interesting for listeners that are new. I have talked about the baby crying thing a few times. Usually it comes up in regards to Southeast Alaska. There's a lot of it'll be reported out there in other places as well. Usually they say that it is potentially sasquatch that is trying to lure something, somebody, someone into the woods. Sometimes this is coupled with the individual will hear their name from the woods. I've also talked to an individual where they were trying to lure their dog into the woods.

12:40 It does happen all over the US. Talk to a young lady from Tennessee that experienced something similar Southeast Alaska. I think Northern Idaho was the young lady with the dog. But it is a very interesting thing, and I'm glad that you didn't go walking after it. I think that would have been probably a mistake. And especially if you start to hear your voice or yeah, your voice, the voice of your husband or something saying your name. Definitely do not go into the woods after that. Yeah. I can't even describe how. It's just something in my head kept telling me that it's not a real baby.

13:22 Don't worry about it. Don't worry about the baby because I'm a woman and I'm like, they're a baby. It needs help, You need to go find the baby. And there's something just kept telling me that's not what's going on. Don't use the backyard. It felt really bad because it had it been a real baby, I would have been just leaving it to his own devices, which would have been terrible. Exactly. That's the tricky part, right, Yeah. That was a really hard part too. Yeah, not not ignore it, but just stand there and just keep listening and just yeah, that's not a real baby, like one cop count there's nothing going on here.

14:03 Absolutely, We're How quiet was it out that night? Oil was dead stone? There was no breeze there is, Like I said, there's usually you can hear like a couple of logging trucks on the main highway, but you don't unless there's a bad accident or something. You don't really hear much at night at all. Gotcha around your place where you're at, do you ever hear any other weird things out in the woods, things that don't really make sense besides what you heard that night. Yeah, recently we had gone another Aurora night. I want to say, maybe a month or so ago. Well, we go to a place about six seven miles away from our house where you can look north across the lake and so you can see the northern light's pretty good over there. And we were over there set a month or so ago, about nine thirty ten ten dirty at night.

15:06 We were getting some pretty good pictures and everything, and we heard the kyokes started gipping, maybe a good group of fourteen to twenty kyokes, like if they were really excited. I don't know if they got to kill or maybe the adults were coming home and the pups got excited, not sure, but they started hoop and howl are in pretty dang excitedly. And we were listening to him having a good time for a minute and then there was just this really long drawn out how and then all the kyokes and everything just shut up and nothing made a peep. At about five ten minutes later, somebody that lives around that lake come over to where we were and he got out of his truck and he walked up to the shoreline and used to go all good spot sees lights. We were like, yeah, so did you hear them kyotes? And said yeah, said did you hear them kyotes or did you hear that noise that they made them kyotes shut up? And we're like, well, yeah, that was weird, wasn't it. And it's yeah, a little bit.

16:19 That was the end of that. We never heard of kyote make another noise the rest of the night. And in that same area there is somebody that has they have a cow, and we had noticed because we were Sometimes it'll be chased on the lights for three days at a time. They think they think it'll hit, So you go out and you just you sit out all eight reacently hoping for it to hit. So we've been going out for about three nights then and every night we could hear this bool or this cow just super upset. I don't know if there's something was scaring it, but it was just it is a very not happy cow.

17:03 And on the one night, all of a sudden, across the lake we heard what I don't know if it was another cow, because there shouldn't nothing be nothing over there, but something was imitating the cow, like I don't know if it was making fun of the cow being scared or whatever, but I'm like, I asked my husband, I'm like, do you hear that. Yeah, Like the third another property across the lake, and it's like, I don't think so, because I think that's National forest Land over there. I'm like, there's something over there that sounds exactly like the cow that we hear behind us, and he's like, no, no, I hear it. So we just shrugged it off. So that didn't make too much sense either, not not that any of.

17:55 Us does exactly what. It is a thing where you can hear. The weirdest accounts have to do with just animals or birds being mimicked in a weird way, and it can be anything from owls to let's see what else. Ducks was the weird one ducks in Washington State because it started out as a regular duck, but then at the end it sounded like I think it was like a really angry sounding duck. It's just very strange. Yeah, we's see. I'm like a biology nerd, so I'm really good with animals. You can just show me the picture of a snake and I'll tell you the species just by looking at it. I'm one of those people.

18:42 And there was a night we were out National forest Land and it sounded to me like a cuckoo bearre, which is obviously not an animal that there is native to North America, but it sounded very much the cucko bearro to me right, And so I'm standing there with my husband and I'm listening, and I'm like, why is there a cuco barrow in the middle of them? I should get pushed and I'm listening. I'm listening, and then it sounded a little bit more hoody, but then it would go back to a more monkey noise. Then I looked online and I did find the bar now when they get excited, and it sounded very similar, very similar, but it just sounded two loud like, but it was bigger than an owl. I don't know if that makes sense.

19:48 Yeah, that definitely makes sense. Sometimes people will describe it as it sounded like an owl, but it was like three or four hundred pounds the way it sounded like, which is pretty interesting. There was like maybe three of them, and they were pretty spread out from each other, and they were like going back and forth at times. It's like they were telling each other. I don't know what, but it's like they were discussing something. When we listened to that for about half an hour or so, but where we had been at was there was an old boat landing there and we weren't seeing much of the lights, so we were thinking about hitting home anyways, and then these kids drove up on us about three or four cars deep, and we could tell that was their little party spot in the woods. You could see where they've been doing donuts and everything, little young adult stuff. So they pulled up and that was just there was no more of that.

20:54 It was just completely quiet, and they asked how long we were going to be there, and we said we were going to go ahead and head out, so we left. But yeah, that had happened. Every now and then we'll see just weird tree structure kind of things. It just don't naturally make sense. The young saplings that'll be like pulled over in an arc that are like almost tied down by other smaller branches to make like a loop. And some places will go we'll see like little tepee structure looking things. Not anything out size to like it looks like a large animal would be like hunkering down in there or anything, but just stuff in places where it's I don't think kids did that, or why would somebody do this, or things like.

21:55 That that's very interesting. It's when you look at the whole picture. It definitely starts to bring stuff together. Have you looked at a thing like the Bigfoot Mapping project yet to see if there are other sightings in your area? Yeah? I did, and there are two instances on the Bigfoot Mapping Project which are very near our area. One of them, I want to say, was a class A sighting maybe ten fifteen miles from here. Now. I did recently. I just checked the Bigfoot Mapping Project the other day and I did see somebody about three hours northeast of us, still in the up. The ups really lied they had just reported a sighting recently, I believe, with tracks and possible vocalizations. I did notice when I first moved to the area that there are certain places where like all the houses will have big Foot cut outs and Bigfoot little statues and stuff, and you'll see them clustered together in certain areas, And at first I thought it was like a cute, little localized thing. The more I started spending time here and the more things started happening, and I was like, ohh well, maybe they're marking their properties or shape zungs. I know it sounds weird,

23:30 whether the don't know thing I'd come up with, and that I've actually been interested. So if I walked, if I went over to those areas and went house to house, I thought about what would happen if I just asked them why do you have this big foot? They got in your yard and then went helse to house, just just to see what they would say, whether or not they kind have any experiences, whether or not it's just to goald Scandinavian upbringing with a lot of people from different parts in Northern Europe. When they MiG read, they have their own fairy tale kind of things. You know, it is very interesting. It's cool to know that there are other sightings reported in your area as well.

24:12 Is your husband Jack available to share what he experienced a few years ago? Yeah? Sure, I'll give Jackpine. Hello, Hey Jack, this is Jeremiah. How's Yeah? How's it going? Man? I'm doing well in yourself, I'm doing great. I was just talking to Aaron about what you guys have been experiencing back in August with the baby cry noises and the wood knocks, which is very interesting. Let me say that at some point their own three point thirty I got cold and came in the house, and that was before the knocking. Yeah, so yeah, we shared the baby crying experience and then the KNOCKX he you know, described me.

25:01 Now, Aaron was saying that you actually had experienced something similar quite a while ago. Yeah, memories get fuzzy with time, but I'm kind of put the facts together based on the vehicle I was driving. It was autumn of eighty six or eighty seven, and we were on the western end of the Upper Peninsula, on some of the border waters. It was like me and three buddies and it was just late at night and we didn't want to go home. Let's go find a place we can hang out at her maybe even crash shaft. And we weren't there probably an hour, and sounded like something was coming through the woods, crashing, a large animal. And at some point we heard the baby cry sound loud, too remote to be an actual baby and too loud to be an actual baby, and I collectively looked at each other and decided, yeah, let's run for the truck and get out of here. So that's the extent of the experience.

26:11 That's a really unique one, being that you said it was pretty close to you and pretty loud. Oh yeah, like when Aaron and I experienced this back in August three, four or five times as low as that. How old were you at that time? On mid twenties? Okay, gotcha? Is that anything you've heard from other people up there in the Upper Peninsula reporting hearing things like that in the woods or do people not really talk about things like that up there?

26:51 No personal accounts. I do watch a lot of paranormal ENCRYPTI documentaries and streams and such, and you hear of that on there, but no, I can't say that a neighbor or anything ever discussed nothing like that with me. All right, thank you for sharing that. It does definitely add something to what's going on in that area. And I don't talk to a lot of people from the Upper Peninsulas. It's it's pretty rare to be able to talk to someone from up there. So I appreciate you guys. And Aaron is still there right, ye, all right, thank you. Yeah, you're welcome.

27:35 Hijremaa Hey, Yeah, that's very interesting what Jack experienced as well, being that it was so close, so loud, that's a pretty pretty unique thing he experienced back there in the eighties. One thing I forgot to tell you is people they able to got a hunting dog some step around here. It's a big hunting area, beagles and bear dogs and stuff. And there is a neighbor directly across the alley, Famar, and they take in the dogs at the rescue can't house, and they all they all live in the backyard and they bark at the slightest anything like all the time.

28:18 And the whole time the baby cried and then k not for happening, none of the dogs in town made a peep, not a single one of them. Oh wow. And I thought that that was strange because they bark it the deer will come in. That's hunting season right now. So the deer have been betting down in our backyard and that's fine. They know they will leave them alone. Nobody will hurt them here. But yeah, those dogs will still smell when the deer come in, and then they'll just start barking and barking. They know. And the whole time that happened that there wasn't a peep out of them dogs. It's one of those things you have to wonder. It's if there's something built into their instinct or just what they know that you hear something like that, just shut up.

29:07 Yeah. So yeah, so that caught me after guard was litter when I thought about it, and then I wait, some dogs can't make us noise and they bark it everything. One thing that maybe we were thrown around hypothesizing is that when there is a strong aura night, maybe that it's the excited in some way like it does us human we like to go see the lights. Maybe they like to see the lights too, and I'm sure they can probably see way better in the dark than we can. There is a hypothesis starting to go around right now where I feel terrible because the young lady's name escapes me. I'll put the link in the description for this. She's got a study where she went through all of the BFRO public reports and figured out that most activity will have happen on nights when there's either a full moon or no moon at all. So I thought that was a really interesting thing. But it'd be interesting to look to see if there's a correlation to the northern lights as well.

30:20 Yeah, that would be that would be interesting to poke around and find out. But yeah, it's just there's weird stuff that happens. Up in the up I'm sure, Oh, absolutely, that whole Upper Peninsula. And then Wisconsin's got you guys up there, you got some weird stuff. I'm not that far away central Iowa, but you go up north, there's weird stuff up there. But yeah, sometimes sometimes we see we'll go out hiking sometimes and these aren't like off the beaten paths. They're great near the trails where people are walking, structures, different X marks, boat over trees, just stuff you can tell it didn't happen naturally. And a lot of times sometimes these places are like there were the college kids will go and study, so they're like protected areas where there definitely won't be no tree selling or anything like that.

31:19 And then you'll just you'll see these weird structures as you're walking down the trail and it's almost like you're coming into our house. Now. It's like a road sign like now entering this town or whatever kind of thing. And that's the way I treat it. Yeah, it's weird when you see stuff like that way out in the middle of nowhere. And I've seen some of that stuff broken off, like twist broken like eight to ten feet up and it just or you've got huge axes and this is way out in the middle of nowhere in the woods of Oregon, and you're like, man, this doesn't make sense logically, what's going on here? So I get that.

32:04 Yeah, And that's the thing is like some of these places where we'll see stuff, Like I said, it's not off the beaten path. It's great on betrayal, like I said, it's almost like a house side. Okay, now entering our house kind of thing. Better behave right. Yeah, exactly. Yeah, And don't go inside the tree structures because that can be a whole deal. Some people say you don't want to go messing around inside the structures. That can cause weird stuff, and I don't know how I feel about that, but that's not to mess with it for sure. Yeah. Just the whole baby crying thing, like it was very nerving.

32:47 It was very creepy. Like I said, I felt bad because it's in my head like there's a baby that needs help and I wasn't helping. In you feel pretty guilty. But at the same time than when I had remembered one of your podcasts and I was like, let me just not just to see what happens. I didn't expect anything to happen, but then when it did, I was like, we got to follow through now, dummy. Yeah, I gotta keep going with it. There you go, started it, you know you better finish it. I know you tend to ask people what do you think it is? Or whatever?

33:27 My guess is as good as anybody else is. I really don't I really don't know what happened. And I'm pretty sure nobody had their baby outside. Yeah, I'm pretty sure. I would say the chances of there being an actual baby out there at two am in the morning pretty slim. Pretty slim. Yeah. So I think that you made the right decision to not go into the dark after the baby noise. So I would have done the same thing. If these things are really out there and they flush and blood that some people say, or even the lou cutting or whatever they amount of logging trucks every day, it's sad. It's really sad because they're taking the forests done way faster than they can breathe, and I think that's causing some of these instances to happen. Because there's there's nowhere eld st go.

34:26 It makes sense they're they're having their areas cleared out. That means they have to move to areas and might not expect them, and the same thing happens, I think when you have large forest fires, they they get driven out of maybe areas in the woods. You see them in different ones, or you see them moving around. That I think is a real thing to look out for, especially in the in the Pacific Northwest with all the fires out there. Yeah, speaking from someone I didn't grow up with the Upie I didn't grow up in the Midwest as actually born on the East Coast and was on military breath for most of my childhood. But just somebody coming in looking from the outside, I could see where with the old mining towns, because there's a lot of mining up here back in the day and a lot of them closed down and then mostly the only thing that's left is logging. They're talking about opening up some more nec mines and stuff here in the near future, and that certainly won't help things. But you as you drive around, yeah, you'll be going through a national forest land, but you can tell that it was logged seal years ago and these trees are now growing back. And one of the things that irritates me about them whenever they free forests so to speak, is that they're all in line so

35:59 that there's nowhere for the animals to hide all the trees. Oh sure, yeah, yeah, yeah. I could see we're you would push more into the protected areas, like I said, like where the college studies, just the outskirts of towns, and you would just want to push in because that's the only thing left to do. And unfortunately, with the up, a lot of people from Lower Michigan and Chicago that are very absoluent and have money, and they're buying up all these outskirt properties in the middle of the woods, and then they're cutting out swathsa forests to build their houses that they only visit two weeks out of the year, which is even more sad.

36:50 So you have that happening, and I think, if I'm not mistaken, the population is like two hundred and forty thousand for eighteen thousand square miles. But that's only the that's only the year round population, and in the summer population doubles from all the tourists, and then all the tourists go away, and then if the snow is good enough, which last year we didn't really have no snow, so the snow whalers did to come, but usually you have the snowo wheelers that come up, the hunters that come up, all your ice fishermen. So it very much relies on all the tourism aspect up here. And I just I'm afraid that if there is a population up here that it's either getting pushed out or being windowed completely or stue to the deforestation and the amount of people that are the are building second and third homes if they only visit every couple of weeks out.

38:06 Of the year, and those are the areas where you know, if they're doing a lot of cutting down of trees where they're they probably would have experiences. It's just the trick with that is they're only there for a few weeks of the year. Yeah, because that's the thing. Even if there were stuff happening, I don't think there some of them are here long enough to even. Know it exactly, unless they have cameras set up and then they might catch stuff on it, but it might just keep them away. You never know. Cameras are a tricky thing for sure. But yeah, I've noticed that I have a reptile that I keep and I bought cameras for your enclosures, and I bought another one for part of the room. And then when we moved up here, I put the camera outside on the back porch and it worked fine for the longest time, as long as I had it in the porch area. And then I had me and my husband had moved it and put it further out so it could see more in the backyard because I wanted to see if I could catch an other lights on the camera. And now it barely works. It only works when it wants to. And I can't figure out what the problem is. I don't know why it is.

39:27 What it is, it's just, yeah, it one of those weird things. For sure. There's an apple tree, a natural apple tree is right across the alley from our house, and the dear will come in and they'll get the apples when they want and everything. I was hoping to catch a little bit of them doing that too, but I moved when I as soon as I moved the camera, it just doesn't work except for when it wants to. Now, very strange range. I see, You've given me the opportunity to explain to you what happened. I can't tell you what it was, and pray that I can't, but that's that's what happened.

40:10 Most of this is just people sharing what they've experienced and other people hear it and then they might be able to get things explained by what you said and it all connects. So it be interesting to see if other people have experienced things and the southwest part of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan as well.
