Two experienced overlanders, Joel Crawford and Cody Frost, share a chilling overnight encounter deep in Washington State’s Gifford Pinchot National Forest, near Ape Canyon, Muddy River, and the infamous Dark Divide.

What began as a routine camping trip turned unsettling when unexplained radio-like static, rock-clacking sounds, and heavy movement around camp broke the unnatural silence of the forest. Later that night, something physically shook a detached overland trailer, despite no visible people or animals nearby.

As morning approached, call-and-response vocalizations echoed through a nearby ravine, moving rapidly through dense old-growth forest. Multiple members of the group—including children—heard the activity, confirming this was not an isolated experience.
