Something unusual is happening with the wildlife at Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge in North Carolina. Officials have documented multiple dangerous encounters involving black bears approaching vehicles — including bears leaning against, standing beside, and even climbing on cars. Bear activity has remained high enough along Milltail Road that a section of the road remains closed. Wildlife officials believe habituation to humans is behind the behavior and are warning visitors to keep their distance and never feed wildlife.
