Five men disappeared after attending a basketball game in Chico, California, on February 24, 1978. Four days later, their car was discovered abandoned on a remote mountain road inside Plumas National Forest—far from their expected route home. Months later, four of the men were found dead in the mountains. Evidence suggested Ted Weiher survived for an extended period inside a Forest Service trailer before dying from starvation and hypothermia. The fifth man, Gary Mathias, was never found. His shoes were reportedly discovered inside the trailer. Nearly five decades later, one of California’s strangest wilderness mysteries remains unresolved.
